2012 Race Reports
Three members of Cheltenham Triathlon Club competed in the Dambuster Duathlon at Rutland Water on Saturday 10th March. The competition was the British National Duathlon Championships and it was also a qualifying event for the ITU World Championships to be held later in the year so the local trio faced some stiff competition from all over the country.
The course consisted of a 10K run which went across the dam and part way round the lake to Normanton Church and back. This was followed by a challenging 42K cycle route which incorporated three steep hill climbs within the first few miles.
Towards the end of the course competitors faced some further short, sharp climbs and a strong headwind before returning to transition. The final 5K run followed the course of the first run to the beginning of the dam and back.
First home for Cheltenham was Paul Turner (55-59) who finished with a spectacular sprint over the final kilometre to complete the course in just two seconds over the three hour mark.
Mary Welsh (3:20) was first in her category 64-69 and took the age group National Duathlon Championship title for the second year running.
Only four minutes later James Kearney (70-74) finished the course to complete his first ever Olympic distance duathlon, taking an impressive 6th place in his age group.
